Mesa Boogie Story

One of the greatest “Boutique” bass amp building companies, Mesa boogie have gone on to be one of the most widely bought and respected Guitar all tube amplifier building companies today. Based in Petaluma California, these amp have become used mainly by rock and metal masters including Korn, Dave Gilmour, Lamb of God and John Petrucci.

The company, Mesa Boogie , was founded by Randall Smith, a repair technician who worked in a music store which serviced many San Fransisco Bay Area masters including the Grateful Dead and Carlos Santana. Smith has said that the first all tube amplifiers he built were almost a practical joke – basically hot rodding Fender Princeton amps. The 10 inch speaker was replaced by a JBL 12 inch, larger transformers were added, and the circuit from a Fender Bassman replaced the original. The story goes that Carlos Santana played the hot-rodded Princeton and exclaimed, “Man, that little thing really Boogies!” Over 200 of the original Princeton Boogies were built between 1967 and 1970, mainly in a workshop converted from a greyhound kennel.

Smith went on to inventing all tube amplifiers in a two-story garage/studio using reject wood from saw mills. He was also had a job rebuilding Mercedes-Benz engines at the time, and the name, “MESA engineering” was invented as a company title he could use to order the engine parts through. The first Mark I amps were released in 1972, and throughout the 70′s various versions were released. This was followed by the Mark II in 1978, the Mark III in the 80′s, the Mark IV in 1990, and today the line is continued with the Mark IV and finally the Mark V. The Mark Series is one of the best and respected all tube amplifiers in history and was Mesa Boogies flagship until the introduction of the Rectifier all tube amplifiers. They are renowned for their compact size, stunning power, and versatility.

The Rectifier amps took off in the 90′s and became the signature heavy guitar sound for that era, used by metal masters such as Korn, Limp Biskit, Metallica and Linkin Park. It was the culmination of Mesa Boogies goal to create a great extreme distorted guitar sound, combined with the signature creamy Mesa Boogie Tone and ominous bottom end. Models in the Rectifier range include, Single Rectifier, Dual Rectifier, Triple Rectifier, Road King and Roadster. The Road King is Mesa Boogie’s most complex amplifier beside the Mark V.

The Lone Star Series was released in 2004 and has 2 versions, the Classic, and the Special. The Classic is similar in sound to classic Fender all tube amplifiers and is great for a Texas blues/Stevie Ray Vaughn type of sound. The Special evokes the retro tone of amps such as the VOX-AC30. The Stilleto Series was released in 2004 and is basically a classic British rock-flavored variant of the Rectifier series. There are 3 versions, the Ace, the Deuce, and the Trident.
