The Beatles 2nd LP: With The Beatles (1963)

With The Beatles is definitely not my favorite Beatles album, in actuality I think it’s probably their least great non Yellow Submarine LP. But that’s not to imply I don’t enjoy listening to it in it’s 2009 glorious remastered form nor is it to imply that it doesn’t have any good tunes on it because I do and it does.

But I do believe that when looking at only the eight Beatles originals on the record, it is probably the worst selection of original songs John, Paul, George, & Ringo ever put out on a record (the very underrated Beatles For Sale has a far better selection of eight original songs) on the other hand, the six covers on this album are pretty good (superior to the six covers on Beatles For Sale, which was their fourth album.)

My most favorite original songs to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs are the first 3 tracks: “It Won’t Be Long,” “All I’ve Got To Do,” and “All My Loving.” Particularly, I have been enjoying track number two, “All I’ve Got To Do” in the remastered mono. It sounds fantastic.

Another original track that has really been growing on me a bit is track #9, “Hold Me Tight.” Paul wrote and sang this song and he’s dismissed it as being a “work song”. And while I’ll agree the song isn’t perfect, I think it is a good time.

“Till There Was You” is my favorite cover on the album. It is a very sickly sweet love song and while I feel I shouldn’t like it, I do anyway. The record’s final track, “Money” is an excellent way to end the album. When I listen closely to the versions of this song included in remastered box sets I realize that the song rocks much harder than I ever realized. It’s a fantastic reminder of how hard The Beatles could rock even in the early years.

For most of the CDs I do prefer the The Beatles Stereo Box Set mixes(especially with the later albums which are my favorite, anyway) when it comes 2009 Beatles box sets but I do think that this CD sounds better in mono.
